GERD is a chronic condition which can lead to a great deal of discomfort for the sufferer. There are many ways in which the levels of pain, or the symptoms can be dampened which can improve the sufferer’s quality of life, and do not require a great deal of effort, particularly in relation to eating habits and changes in lifestyle.

Firstly, the reason acid reflux can be more sever at night is due to the lack of gravity to pull the reflux out of the oesophagus when lying horizontally. A good way to help alleviate some of the pain, and effects of GERD is to ensure that when you sleep, you sleep in a slightly elevated position to allow the reflux to flow more easily from the oesophagus back to the stomach. This will not only help relive the pain but will also help minimise the damage of the acid reflux in your oesophagus while you sleep. The most effective way to achieve this is to prop the bed up with some books or breeze block to ensure your head is higher than your feet. Alternatively, you can try to form a wedge to sleep on with pillows which will again help to promote the impact of gravity on the acid in your oesophagus. Is it also shown that if patients sleep on their left side, reflux is less prominent than when they sleep on their right side.

Some foods and drinks can promote weaker LES muscles, which can lead to increases in acid reflux and should consequently be reduced or avoided altogether. There include chocolate, alcohol, spicy or acidic foods and citrus juices. In general, the reduction of fatty foods in the diet and the cessation of smoking will aid the sufferer and go some way to reducing their acid complaint.

Another way to treat the effects of GERD is by the consumption of prescribed antacids which neutralise the acidic element of the stomach. This greatly reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach, which is higher in GERD patients than in unaffected people, by neutralising it, thus reducing the painful sensations associated with heartburn. Although effective in neutralising the acid for a short period of time, antacids are required in frequent dosages to maintain effect, and as a result a number of additional treatments have been developed, known primarily as histamine antagonists. These work by blocking the acid producing agents within the stomach which are more active in GERD sufferers to reduce the quantities of acid to reflux. There are also pro-motility drugs available which work on the pressure within the lower oesophageal sphincter and strengthen the muscular contractions which often lead to acid reflux.

There are a wide variety of treatment available to help curb the symptoms of GERD. Your medical professional will be capable of informing you of the best treatment for you, and will be able to prescribe the appropriate treatment to dampen your pain and treat your symptoms of GERD effectively.

The first step in acid reflux treatment is to try a few lifestyle changes. These changes may not be as difficult as you think. The first change to make is a change in the way you eat. Eating smaller meals four or five times a day is much better than eating three larger meals which is the traditional way of eating. This has more benefits than just helping to control acid reflux symptoms. When you eat smaller meals your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest the meal. It is more likely the body will digest all of a smaller meal. With a larger meal, the part that is not digested could turn to fat.

Another lifestyle change is to quit smoking if you currently smoke. I know this is hard and you probably have tried many times before. Try a new approach, get a buddy system going, or ask your physician for help. This acid reflux treatment has numerous health benefits to the body when you finally succeed.

Try sleeping on your side instead of your stomach or back. The left side is better than the right, but either side is better than your back. It is more difficult for the acid to go back into the esophagus if you are lying on your side.

When To See Your Doctor

If simple lifestyle changes do not alleviate the problem, you should consult your doctor for advice. Acid reflux treatment is an important part of maintaining overall good health. Your doctor may feel the problem is severe enough to merit you taking acid reflux treatment medication. Many of these prescription medications are expensive but your doctor can advise you which ones would be best for you to take. Some of the older medications now come in a generic which could save you some money. If your doctor prescribes you a medication it is important for you not to stop taking it without consulting him. There is no known cure and stopping your medication will likely cause your symptoms to resurface.

In extreme cases, acid reflux treatment may involve surgery. This is usually after all other methods are exhausted. Doctors are reluctant to do surgery if there is any way to avoid it. Surgery for the treatment of acid reflux does not have a very high success rate. Reflux surgery often results in complications which can be as bad or worse than the disease itself. Before consenting to surgery it is best to consult more than one doctor. Surgery should be a consideration only after all other methods have failed.

Acid reflux is a condition in which the body experience severe to mild burning sensations that are caused by the entry of food in stomach along with acids. This is done by the opening of the valve that is between the stomach and esophagus. This opening is caused by various factors. Eating wrong kind of food is one of the most common factors causing acid reflux. There are times when the person feels like he is going through heart attack but that might be the possibility of having Acid reflex. It is because the acid levels in both heart attack and acid reflex is the same.

Ways to avoid acid reflux:

The symptoms of acid reflux are chest pain, heartburn, extreme discomfort, nausea and difficulty in swallowing. If these symptoms are diagnosed earlier then the problem of acid reflux can be avoided to reach up to critical stages. Hence, regular health check up should be done. Due to pain and severe discomfort in chest patient look for easy and quick solutions. Without knowing the real causes of acid reflux people blindly goes for their fixes. It offers relief for some time but then afterwards the condition remains the same. There is no medical remedy as such to acid reflux problems. Only medications help to quickly reduce the pain.

The root cause of acid reflux problems is diet that we take and the lifestyle that we adopt. Knowing what is the root cause that is creating acid reflux problems in the individuals would help to get down towards the first step to acid reflux relief. Eating wrong foods is common among acid reflux sufferers. Individuals should zero down on things that have to be avoided that aggravate the acid reflux conditions. If the problem occurs due to the life style in which the individual lives then the individual must reduce such activities that aggravate the acid reflux problems.

Finally:

Acid reflux problems can be successfully avoided or reduced by having a proper acid reflux diet plan. Also few changes in the lifestyle helps to curb the problems faced by them in acid reflux conditions. Otherwise if the conditions were worse in acid reflux then surgery of the valve would be the last option.

Man can’t possibly live without food, which is a true and a proven fact. Food provides the body with all the needed nutrients and energy for a man to do all his daily activities.

People know that the digestive system, particularly the stomach, digests all the food taken in by the body. Acids found inside the stomach decompose it, turning it to amino acids and proteins. The acids can’t harm the stomach because it contains a protective membrane which protects it from the acids.

If you listened well to your elementary teacher, you already know that the esophagus is where the food passes through before it reaches the stomach. The esophagus has no protective layer like that of the stomach. So when acid from the stomach is able to penetrate the esophagus, the walls are easily burned. The sensation that you will likely feel is called heartburn.

Heartburn is the first symptom that most people with acid reflux experience. If acid reflux remains untreated, it will just get severe. The next thing that you might experience is regurgitation, wherein the food that you just ate will go back to your mouth. The chest pain will get worse, you will have difficulty in swallowing the food, until finally, you might get asthma, and when the acid reaches your mouth, it will naturally corrode your teeth.

But don’t worry. Acid reflux can be cured but it would greatly depend on the severity of the disease. A small valve, called lower esophageal (LES), can be found in between the esophagus and the stomach. When it does not function properly, you’ll suffer from acid reflux. The heartburn sensation is due to the rising acid level with which the esophageal lining can’t withstand.

The treatment of this condition can be done through medical therapy, and surgical methods. The treatment is aimed at eliminating acid reflux completely from our system.

The cure for acid reflux is antacids. Most people use this more often, and it comes in tablet or liquid form. Some prefer the liquid from more because it is easily consumed. You can take antacids after you’ve eaten, probably after 30 minutes to one hour.

Other antacids in tablet form create a foam-layer inside the stomach, so that acidic juices can’t penetrate through it. But make sure that you chew the tablet well so that its maximum healing properties will be released.

Some medications are focused in strengthening the lower esophageal muscle, and this greatly reduces acid reflux. It would be best to ask a doctor before taking any kind of medication. The doctor can assess the severity of the acid reflux, and will be able to give you the appropriate treatment.

Most doctors recommend a change in diet to those who suffer from acid reflux. Though this may be difficult to some, they have no other choice unless they want to worsen their condition.

Don’t wait until you need a surgical method to cure your condition. It is best to start curing acid reflux as soon as you discover that you’re suffering from it.

If in any case you’ve experienced the symptoms of acid reflux, immediately consult a doctor. Gather as much information about acid reflux, to help you in better understanding your condition. The doctor can provide you with the correct diagnosis and the needed treatment.

Snow white slowly took a small bite of the apple and she fell to the ground losing consciousness. Most children, and even the adults, are familiar with this fairy tale story. It is in fact just a tale, but in real life, the apple can make wonders.

In reality, many people suffer from many diseases; and the worst thing to happen to a person is to die from suffering such disease. But before the situation leads to an unpleasant end, you must be aware that these are still old-time home remedies which really work.

The apple cider vinegar has been used in many homes for many years now. It is proven to cure many ailments like allergies, acne, sinus infections, flu, high cholesterol, candida, chronic fatigue, contact dermatitis, sore throats, gout, arthritis, and acid reflux.

There are a large number of people suffering from acid reflux or the GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease). This usually happens when the LES or the lower esophageal sphincter does not function properly. The contents of the stomach, particularly the liquid, go back to the esophagus. The liquid contains pepsin and stomach acids. The pepsin digests proteins and the acid from the stomach burns the walls of the esophagus causing heartburn.

Experiencing heartburn once in a while should be a cause for worry, but if you experience the sensation more than two times each week, it’s time that you consult a doctor.

Acid reflux is harmful once the esophagus’ lining is destroyed, so you should undergo medication once you’ve been examined and diagnosed with acid reflux to prevent further complications.

Acid reflux is usually treated with antacids, but some people complain that it only makes the situation even worse. If you use antacids, the body will only produce more acids to compensate the decrease in body acids. The reflux will only worsen after the dose wears off at the end of the day.

Apple cider vinegar is now more preferred by people who want a natural way to cure their acid reflux. Going back to natural medicines are also helpful, but it requires patience and time. Natural remedies take some time before you can actually see the effects or results.

A bottle of apple cider vinegar costs between three to four dollars. It’s even cheaper than buying antacids. The best possible cure for acid reflux is just in your kitchen. But if you can’t find one in your kitchen, look for it in the supermarket.

Here is the dosage of drinking apple cider vinegar: two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted in water at least thrice a day. You need a much stronger concoction if you’re currently treating the disease.

Some experience side effects like a metallic/acid taste and a burning tongue. Most people don’t like its taste, but to be cured, you must withstand its unpleasant taste. The apple cider vinegar really works wonders; in fact, you can find many customer testimonials about the benefits of the vinegar.

It doesn’t matter what brand of apple cider vinegar you choose to buy, as long as it gives the needed relief. Studies have proved its effectiveness, so don’t hesitate to use it. Perhaps Snow White was better off drinking apple cider instead of biting that big red apple that the old woman offered.

Individuals diagnosed with acid reflux may be treated with several drugs including those that are prescription and those that are over-the-counter.

Prescription drugs used to treat acid reflux include:

* The proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix

* H2 Blockers, which include Axid, Pepcid, Tagament and Zantac

* Promotility agents such as Reglan

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) deactivates the acid pumps that are located in the cells of the stomach. This is how the body produces acid in the stomach. The effect of PPIs can last for up to 24 hours.

H2 Blockers inhibit the action of histamine. Histamine can stimulate the secretion of stomach acid. These medications only partially block the production of stomach acid. These medications last anywhere from six to ten hours.

Reglan will cause your stomach muscles to contract, which aid the stomach to empty and strengthens the lower esophagus splinter (LES).

Over-the-counter medications for acid reflux includes the use of antacides, H2 Blockers, antacid H2, the proton pump inhibitors and (PPIs).

Antacids include Alka-Seltzer, Bromo-Seltzer, Gelusil, Maalox, Milk of Magnesia, Mylanta, Riopan, Rolaids and Tums. These work by neutralizing stomach acids and the effect lasts from only 30 minutes to two hours depending on whether your stomach is full or empty when you take the antacid.

H2 Blockers include Axid AR, Pepcid AC, Tagament HB, and Zantac 75. These work by inhibiting the action of histamine. They can be effective for 6 to 10 hours.

Antacid H2 such as Pepcid Complete neutralizes stomach acid and also the production of stomach acid. Pepcid can last from 6 to 10 hours.

The Proton Pump Inhibitor Prilosec OTC is used to deactivate acid pumps in the cells of the stomach. It inhibits the acid production.

If you suffer from long-term acid reflux and lifestyle changes have not helped such as eating smaller more frequent meals, avoiding alcohol and smoking and losing excessive body weight, and taking prescribed or non-prescription medications you may be a candidate for surgery. Talk with your doctor about your options including surgery – radiofrequency treatment, and fundoplication.

As with any disease or condition, the individual should always start with the least invasive treatment such as lifestyle changes and then advance through treatment options to the non-invasive treatments such as medications and techniques to reduce stress or other factors that may be contributing or triggering acid reflux like being obese, smoking or drinking alcohol. There are many medications that can be tried in combination with other techniques but if all else fails you doctor may suggest some of the more invasive procedures including surgery. If your doctor is not willing to exhaust all non-invasive procedures first, seek out a second opinion from another doctor or practice.

Acid reflux is a painful condition experienced by millions of people every year. In fact, many feel the incidence of acid reflux is on the rise and attribute the increase to the modern high fat, high sugar diet and relatively sedentary lifestyle. Acid reflux is basically severe, recurring heartburn, generally believed to result from increased abdominal pressure. This pressure prohibits the esophageal sphincter muscle from closing off the stomach, and stomach contents (including strong stomach acids) wash up into the esophagus, causing intense pain.

Numerous over the counter and prescription remedies for acid reflux exist, but not all sufferers find relief from medication. Additionally, the side effects of some medications, as well as their expense make them unattractive choices for some afflicted with acid reflux disease. Many people are constantly searching for a more natural, homemade remedy for this issue.

Acid Reflux and Vinegar: A Potential Homeopathic Cure but Proceed with Caution

One natural remedy that has many proponents is apple cider vinegar. Numerous success stories can be found on nearly any acid reflux message board. Yet there seems to be no clear reason why acid reflux and vinegar should be related in any positive way – if anything adding more acid to the stomach (in the form of vinegar, which is acidic) should complicate acid reflux symptoms.

One hypothesis about why acid reflux and vinegar might be related is a controversial one – specifically, that acid reflux can sometimes be caused by too little stomach acid. not too much stomach acid. This theory holds that undigested food ferments in the stomach in the absence of appropriate levels of stomach acid. Adding vinegar aids digestion and reduces symptoms. Note that no one has tested this particular idea about acid reflux and vinegar.

Another common explanation for the relationship between acid reflux and vinegar is the placebo effect; people feel better because they expect to feel better. This effect is termed placebo because that’s the name for the decoy drug used in drug trials. Participants in the placebo group receive a fake drug (either a sugar pill or other pharmaceutical filler) to study the impact of expectations of medication on actual symptoms.

Some sufferers don’t particularly care why acid reflux and vinegar are related – as long as they are. Feeling better is the end goal for most with acid reflux disease and many are willing to try anything once. The good news is that vinegar is unlikely to be harmful to people when consumed in reasonable quantities. Some acid reflux sufferers have indicated that acid reflux and vinegar don’t mix well; they report intense increases in pain when ingesting vinegar.

Acid reflux is also known as GERD, or gastro esophageal reflux disease. It occurs when a sphincter that is located at the bottom of the esophagus stops working properly. The problem is that food that has passed through the esophagus to the stomach can come back up through the sphincter into the esophagus and sometimes even into the mouth. The result can be painful heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest and throat, and even long term damage to the esophagus if not acid reflux treatment is not sought.

Acid reflux treatment can vary from person to person once it is diagnosed. For some, lifestyle changes may be sufficient to curb the pain and discomfort of the disease. These modifications can include avoiding foods that trigger the symptoms. There are many foods that are found to bring on acid reflux, and that list can be a good place to begin. However, a food that might be a problem for one person may not cause an issue for another. Patients are often advised to keep a diet diary, so that offensive foods can be identified and avoided.

Other things to avoid or limit if acid reflux is diagnosed are overeating, alcohol, coffee and smoking. A person who is overweight may be advised to lose the excess pounds as a part of the acid reflux treatment plan. Since symptoms can be exacerbated after a night of lying flat, elevating the upper body by about eight inches during sleep can lead to more comfortable mornings.

When Lifestyle Changes Are Not Enough

If lifestyle changes do not bring about the desired relief, other steps can be taken for acid reflux treatment. Sometimes over-the-counter antacids will do the trick. In other cases, a prescription medication might be required. If medication becomes the acid reflux treatment of choice, the patient must understand that it is likely the medicine will have to be taken regularly and continued indefinitely.

For those who do not wish to continue medication indefinitely, or the medication is not effective, another option is surgery. There is a surgical procedure that can be done to strengthen the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach, and thus prevent acid reflux from occurring. The surgery is done by laparoscopy and has had good results.

Acid reflux can be a painful and sometime serious disease. Fortunately it is also a disease that is easy to diagnose, and the many options for acid reflux treatment make it a much easier disease to live with.
