Acid reflux is a disorder whereby the sphincter at the top of the stomach cannot effectively prevent stomach acid from re-entering the esophagus. Esophagus is a tube that connects the throat with the stomach. Simultaneously, throat becomes sore and it taste bitter in mouth. If acid reflux disease kept untreated it may be dangerous for the individual’s voice. Because the sporadic attack of acid reflux will damage the esophagus or food canal. So with this person can lose his/her voice also.

Effect On Voice:

Mainly in some cases, the acid reflux symptoms of a sore throat can effect on peoples voice and they can lose it complete. People might have experienced a burning sensation in food canal as good passes along it, as well as stomach pains and upsets. In such cases, the stomach acid can travel far enough up the esophagus so that it to the junction that leads to the lungs. This can then result in small amount of acid entering into the lungs, which causes irritation and cough in the throat. When the throat becomes affected, it will affect the voice. If people left untreated may cause shortness of breath and permanent damage to the vocal chords. This change can be noticed via loss of volume, a deepening of the tone or hoarseness. This is really very serious acid reflux symptom. A person may also lose his/her voice permanently if proper treatment not done. Apart from this, the lungs and the tubes that lead to the lungs can also be affected by sporadic acid reflux attack. Generally, treating acid reflux early enough is possible. In fact, by having proper diets people can avoid the acid reflux attack. The best thing that people can do, is to avoid those foods which are rich in acidic.

Acid reflux may affect on the voice also because the acid which passes from throat may cause serious damage in the food canal. By this people can permanently lose their voice. If acid reflux will not get the proper treatment it may affect to the vocal chords. Voice plays an important function in human life . So, to reduce such kind of uncertainty people should take the proper treatment of acid reflux disease.

We all eat, so it is understandable that occasionally most of us will experience a little heartburn, or indigestion. Do you understand when that occasional bout with heartburn or indigestion can be determined to be something a little bit more, like acid reflux disease? Our esophagus is suppose to close off so food and liquids will remain in the stomach once they get there but sometimes the muscle, the “lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes or does not function properly and stomach contents and or acid can escape and splash up back into the esophagus or even worse yet all the way back up into the throat or mouth, even into our airways in the lungs. When this occurs problems can happen and we can become ill or have difficulty swallowing. It can even develop into something serious like esophageal cancer. Do you understand acid reflux disease, and would you like to understand it better?

Acid reflux disease is also called, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. There are generally three reasons why a person may experience this back-up of stomach contents or acid and they include the esophagus being overwhelmed by the quantity of stomach content and acid, the stomach’s contents are too acidic, or the food has not cleared the esophagus fast enough. These three things can happen singly or they can be combined.

When fluid from the stomach backs-up and reaches the mouth, we call that acid indigestion and we tend to burp and feel this burning at the back of our throat and possibly taste acid or stomach contents in our mouth. As the stomach contents and acid flow back up the esophagus it can create a burning sensation, which we call heartburn. If you experience either of these two situations more than twice a week you may have acid reflux or even a more serious problem. You should see your doctor to be evaluated and diagnosed.

Individuals that have acid reflux and fail to treat it can end up with serious problems such as erosive esophagitis, which is a condition in which inflamed tissue, swelling and irritation occurs in the esophagus. Typically half of all those who experience acid reflux end up with non-erosive type of acid reflux and it can be called, “nonerosive reflux disease (NERD). These individuals will have the normal symptoms of acid reflux but do not show any physical signs of esophageal injury, they are the lucky ones.

Then, there are the individuals who have symptoms of acid reflux and despite taking medications (either prescription or over-the-counter) they continue to have the symptoms of acid reflux. This type of reflux is called, “refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (Refractory GERD). These individuals usually need to have a more aggressive treatment plan or they need to be monitored and re-evaluated for other possible causes of their acid reflux symptoms.

Do you understand acid reflux disease any better? If you still have questions, see your doctor.

While millions of people suffer from acid reflux, that doesn’t mean you should just learn to live with it. In addition to being painful and hard to deal with it can result in some long term effects for you that aren’t good. In fact, in worse case scenarios that failure to treat acid reflux can result in death. That is because the esophagus will continue to get narrower and that makes it harder to breath.

You also make your body more susceptible to cancer in the esophagus and the development of ulcers in the stomach when you don’t treat acid reflux. Many individuals develop severe respiratory infections and problems due to untreated acid reflux. It can allow fluids to enter the lungs and then they become inflamed and infected. If you already have major health concerns including asthma then you are only going to see them getting worse.

Even if your acid reflux doesn’t affect you to that extreme it is going to affect your life in many ways. If you are up several nights a week due to it then you aren’t going to be able to get the rest you need. That can make it hard for you to concentrate and you will be irritable. You can also end up physically sick if you don’t get the rest that your body needs.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is present when you have chronic acid reflux. It is going to result in the esophagus becoming inflamed and irritated. This type of disease is going to continue allowing further damage to the esophagus to occur if you don’t take action for it. This may require prescription medications that you take daily. If the condition is severe you may need to consider surgery in order to stop further damage.

Barrett’s esophagus is a common ailment when acid reflux has gone untreated. This results when the lining of the esophagus has suffered quite a bit of damage. As a result of so much acid in there is begins to eat away at this protective lining. This is a very rare condition that is diagnosed in individuals with untreated GERD. Many individuals with Barrett’s esophagus begin to loss weigh rapidly as they have a great deal of trouble swallowing foods and drinks.

The term esophagitis refers to an irritation in the esophagus. Generally the individual will have a red, swollen esophagus that is inflamed. It will be very difficult to breathe, eat, and swallow. You may not even be able to swallow pills to help reduce the formation of acid so injections may be necessary.

Esophagitis is very serious because a person is likely not getting all the nutrients they need. There is also a very big chance of bacteria forming in the esophagus which will result in infections. It is also known to lower the effectiveness of the immune system which means the individual is more susceptible to an array of different illnesses.

Esophageal cancer has become a common diagnosis due to the number of people with untreated acid reflux in our society. If the cancer isn’t found right away it can spread into other parts of the body. The cancer cells can spread very rapidly so aggressive treatment has to be taken. It is harder to fight though once the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Seeing a doctor early when you aren’t able to cure your acid reflux issues will help prevent this from becoming a reality.

Since there are many different ways in which acid reflux can end up having long term effects on you take care of it now. Don’t let it escalate into something that causes severe damage to your body. Doing so will mean you have even more serious health concerns to take care of in the future. Focus on staying as healthy as you can so that you will be able to enjoy a long and happy life.

Acid reflux is also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Generally acid reflux attacking people can be uncomfortable situation, where the liquid that is in person’s stomach backs up into the esophagus. This liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus. The lining of the esophageal becomes irritated from stomach acid splashing on it. Each time this happens, new tissue must grow over the damaged tissue. After repeated irritation, the cells of this tissue begin to change, and have pre-cancerous tendencies. So, if no treatment is done on time can lead to hazardous situation. Ignoring frequent acid reflux attack can cause four major health complication related to esophageal. These four complications are esophageal cancer, Barrett’s esophageal, esophagitis and esophageal strictures.

Acid Reflux And Esophageal Cancer:

Acid reflux, commonly known as heartburn, which occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter fails to close properly. This allows stomach contents such as acids, bile and food to enter into the lower esophageal region, especially after the meals. Heartburn is one of the common affect of acid reflux. When this condition become long-standing, it may leads to inflammation and ulceration of the esophagus or esophageal cancer. There are some important symptoms of esophageal cancer that are heartburn, difficult swallowing, food being stuck in esophagus, weight loss and vomiting of blood. If people will not do the proper treatment for this, the tumor will eventually block the esophagus, so no food or liquid can pass into the stomach. And this can also affect the other organ of the body. So, to avoid this hazardous and painful condition people should keep proper care of their diets and make an effective food plan.

People should not take things lightly that are related to acid reflux attack; otherwise it may create a serious and hazardous result for them. People may think of having cancer with acid reflux attack but it is true that they can suffer with esophageal cancer from continuous attack of acid reflux. So, it totally depends upon the people that who they are scheduling their food plan which keeps them safe from acid reflux disease. They should work on eat healthy and life healthy dictum.

Acid reflux disease, often called GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), occurs when acid and other materials in the stomach “back up” into the esophagus, creating a painful, burning sensation and sometimes causing permanent damage to the lining of the esophagus as well. There are medications that can help ease the discomfort of acid reflux disease, but for maximum benefit, doctors also suggest lifestyle changes along with the use of medications. Some of these include:

Weight Loss

For reasons not clearly understood, obese people tend to be more at risk for acid reflux disease than people who are of normal weight. Studies have shown that losing just 10% of your body weight can ease the symptoms of acid reflux disease.

Abstention From Smoking And Drinking

Nicotine is thought to weaken the esophageal sphincter. The esophageal sphincter is a tough rim of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. When this muscle is weakened, it allows acid from the stomach to flow back into the lower part of the esophagus. Alcohol may also weaken the esophageal sphincter. It can also cause the stomach to produce excessive acid.

Staying Upright For At Least 45 Minutes After A Meal

Immediately after a meal, your stomach fills with acid as it works to digest the foods you have eaten. If you lie down during this time, the acid is likely to flow into your esophagus. If you sit or stand upright, however, gravity will help keep the acid in the stomach where it belongs.

Eat Several Small Meals A Day Instead Of Three Big Ones

The more food consumed, the more acid is needed to help digest it. Eating frequent small meals is much easier on your digestive system, and is therefore less likely to cause acid reflux disease.

Avoidance Of Clothing That Is Tight Around The Waist

Tight clothing forces food and acid up against the esophageal sphincter. If the sphincter is not working properly, it will allow this food to flow back into the esophagus with unpleasant results.

Avoidance Of Fast Foods

Most fast foods are high in fat. Fatty foods cause the stomach to produce more acid, which can lead to increased symptoms of acid reflux disease.

Taking Medications As Prescribed

If your doctor has given you medication for your acid reflux disease, take it exactly as prescribed. Many types of medication are to be taken at least daily, whether you are having symptoms or not. Stopping the medication suddenly is likely to lead to a sharp increase in symptoms. Talk to your doctor before you discontinue any medication for acid reflux disease.

Contrary to popular belief, acid reflux isn’t something that people have to deal with as they get older. In fact, there are more infants and young adults that suffer from it than you probably realize. It is believed that genetic factors play a role in it as well. Some people assume that sense you can’t do anything about your genetic make up that you just have to deal with it.

Yet there are many factors out there that can increase your risk of suffering from acid reflux. The more of these areas that you take part in the more likely you will have concerns. It may be only once in a while that you suffer from acid reflux or it may end up being several times each day. Take an inventory of your own lifestyle and then make changes so that you can reduce your risk.

The biggest factor that can lead to acid reflux is your diet. When you consume foods that are spicy or that contain citrus fruits, fatty meats, and even desserts with chocolate in them you increase your chances of suffering from it. Individuals that are in the habit of eating very fast or over eating having a higher risk. Eating in the hours before you go to bed will also lead to acid reflux taking place while you sleep.

Many women experience boats with acid reflux during their pregnancy. It can be due to many different factors. Eating foods late at night or getting up to eat and then going back to sleep is one of them. Generally though it has to do with the presence of hormone levels that are higher than normal. Acid reflux is more common later in the pregnancy due to the pressure that is placed upon the stomach as the baby is growing.

Obese individuals can experience the same type of pressure on their stomach too. That is why they are more at risk for acid reflux. Do your best to reduce your overall weight by taking action. Eat foods that are healthy for you and also get more exercise. Dropping ten pounds or more will make a significant difference in the amount of pressure against your stomach. It will also lower your risk of other types of health concerns.

Do you smoke or drink on a regular basis? If so you are increasing your risk of acid reflux. This is because both of these practices weaken the lining of the esophagus. Research has shown that individuals that smoke produce more stomach acid than those that don’t. At the same time it reduces the amount of saliva that is produced to counteract that acid.

There are some medical conditions that can increase your risk of acid reflux as well. Ulcers are sores that form along the lining of the stomach. They can result in more acid being present in the stomach. With a hernia the valves on the esophagus can be open when they should be closed. This is what allows acid to come back up from the stomach.

These types of problems can be diagnosed by your doctor. With effective treatment though it can be significantly reduced. Letting such medical problems go undetected will result in the acid reflux getting worse even when you have made changes to other risk factors in your life.

Being able to identify the various factors that can increase your risk of acid reflux is important. You don’t want to suffer from such pain when you don’t have to. You also don’t want to be causing damage to your esophagus as it can be irreparable. Taking care of your body and having good habits will likely take care of problems you have now with acid reflux. If you can prevent it from being an ailment that you have in the future that is great news too.

We are probably used to being told that certain diseases and conditions carry with them the possibility of complications and the same is true for those who have acid reflux. Usually is you suffer from occasional acid reflux or it occurs only when you indulge on occasion with either fatty, spicy foods or too much alcohol you will experience mild discomfort that goes away with the incident or occasion. There are those however for which acid reflux is a common occurrence and for them the possibility of complications is greater. If you have persistent acid reflux with frequent relapses and if your reflux remains untreated, you can experience serious complications as time goes on. These serious complications can include Barrett’s esophagus, erosive esophagitis, problems with your airway, lungs, throat and teeth, and severe narrowing of the esophagus. The elderly are at special risk for complications from acid reflux.

If you already have an inflamed esophagus, your beginning symptoms of acid reflux are intense, your symptoms persist despite treatment or you have any underlying muscular abnormalities you are at special risk for complications from acid reflux.

Some of the possible complications include erosive esophagitis and the complications that can occur as a result of having that, which include bleeding (even long-term bleeding), and ulcers in the esophagus or Barrett’s esophagus (BE), and esophageal cancer. It must be noted that just having acid reflux itself does not mean that you will get esophageal cancer.

Strictures (narrowed regions of the esophagus) can develop if your esophagus is severely damaged from acid reflux that is left untreated over a long period of time. These strictures can have a negative effect on your ability to swallow creating the condition known as dysphagia (difficult swallowing). The damage to your esophagus can even cause food to be lodged in which you will need to have surgery or to do stretching exercises in order to have normal swallowing again. The good news is that sometimes these strictures actually prevent further damage from acid reflux as they can stop acid from traveling back up the esophagus by their very presence.

Respiratory diseases such as asthma can occur together with acid reflux because studies show that it happens in 32% to 80% of asthma cases. When acid reflux occurs there are two things that can happen to cause an asthma attack: the acid reflux stimulates the vagus nerves which can trigger the airways in the lung to constrict causing the symptoms of asthma or the regurgitated stomach contents and stomach acid can come into the mouth where it can be inhaled or aspirated into the airways which can then trigger an asthma attack. Scientists are uncertain as to whether or not asthma causes acid reflux or acid reflux causes asthma.

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach contents, including acid, back up (reflux) into esophagus, causing inflammation and causes damage to the esophagus. A detailed history taking is vital to diagnosis. Useful investigation may include barium x-rays, esophageal pH monitoring and esophagogastroduoenoscopy (EDG).

Diagnosis for Acid Reflux

In general diagnosis, EDG is done when the patient does not respond well to the treatment, and had symptoms or required medications for prolonged time has dysphagia, anemia, blood in stool (detected chemically), has weight loss, or has changes in the voice.

1. GERD is generally diagnosed by doctors who listen to the patient’s symptoms and then comparing against their own understanding of what might be causing the disease. Questions about the lifestyle and diet can reveal an awful lot about any person and doctors have received years of training in this skill. If doctor suspects for acid reflux, they normally prescribe a strong antacid for treating the problem. If the antacid isn’t effective then further treatment may require based on further discussion with the doctor.

2. Ulcers and acid reflux can often be confused by patients and sometimes even by doctors. An ulcer is normally accompanied by blood in vomit and it will ” flare” up at specific points during the day. Acid reflux is more of lifestyle issues that 90% of the time one brings for them.

3. Endoscopy helps to exclude the presence of esophageal cancer. X rays taken after a person drinks a barium solution and then lies on an incline with the head lower than feet may show reflux of barium from stomach into esophagus. Doctors may press the abdomen to increase the likelihood of reflux. The swallowed barium also reveals esophageal ulcers or narrowed esophagus.

4. Biopsies are useful in diagnosing cancers of esophageal inflammation other than acid reflux, and the cellular changes of Barrett’s esophagus.

Opt for early diagnosis

People are becoming more heath conscious every single day. The secret fear inside each of them that prevents us going for regular check ups at the doctor. Opting for early diagnosis is key to treating many potentially fatal conditions and acid reflux is not different in any regards.

Millions of people experience the intense pain of acid reflux on a regular basis. Acid reflux disease is thought to result from a problem with the esophageal sphincter muscle, which closes the opening between the stomach and the esophagus. When the muscle does not work correctly, stomach contents (including strong stomach acids necessary for digestion) escape the stomach and move into the esophagus. This results in burning and pain, and if left untreated can even cause tissue damage to the esophagus. So what should those suffering from acid reflux do?

Medical Acid Reflux Disease Treatments

Perhaps the most important piece of advice for someone suffering from acid reflux symptoms is to visit a doctor. Doctors can pinpoint the cause of acid reflux and can also make sure the acid reflux disease treatment used is appropriate. A wide variety of over the counter and prescription drugs are available, but some doctors recommend lifestyle changes first. Only if these lifestyle changes are ineffective are drugs offered as an acid reflux disease treatment. The good news is that these drugs are highly effective for many people suffering from acid reflux. In a very slim minority of cases, when both medical treatments and lifestyle changes fail, surgery may be a last-ditch effort.

Lifestyle Changes

Many doctors attribute the increase in acid reflux to the modern diet filled with simple carbohydrates, high fat goods and relatively low levels of physical activity. Additionally, being overweight makes it more likely you will suffer from acid reflux; it’s likely that increase pressure on the stomach (caused by carrying excess weight in the midsection) make it difficult for the esophageal sphincter to function appropriately. Thus, one acid reflux disease treatment that is often suggested is to follow a low fat diet. Additionally, many doctors suggest completely eliminating things that can aggravate acid reflux disease including carbonated beverages, high acid fruits and vegetables and caffeine.

Many who suffer from acid reflux disease find the symptoms worsen at night. This likely occurs because lying flat makes it easier for stomach acid to escape the stomach, there is no force of gravity to keep contents inside the stomach when lying in the prone position. An additional acid reflux treatment that relates to ones lifestyle, then, is to sleep on an incline. Rising a bed just a few inches can be an effective acid reflux disease treatment. For those who sleep with someone who doesn’t want to incline, or whose bed prohibits rising only one end, wedge pillows, which simply elevate the head and shoulders can also be purchased.

There are few more uncomfortable feelings than the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease and most who suffer from it will take many step

There are few more uncomfortable feelings than the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease and most who suffer from it will take many steps to eliminate the feeling. The first and most obvious is a burning sensation near the top of the stomach. As stomach acid refluxes into the esophagus it is literally burning it lining and letting the body know that something is not right. It cold be a weakened lower esophagus sphincter muscle, a hiatal hernia or from eating too many spicy foods, but finding out what is causing the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease is the first step in the healing process.

Indigestion is commonly referred to as heartburn because a lot of the discomfort is positioned in the chest feeling as though the heart is on fire. This allows many to confuse symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease with a heart attack. These feelings should immediately confirmed by a physician to rule out a heart attack as it is better to be in the emergency room with indigestion than at home with a heart attack.

Many of the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease are consistent with gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD, and many require medical attention to find a cure. Self-medicating to treat the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease may overlook a common problem associated with persistent indigestion.

Reduced Symptoms No Promise Disease Is Gone

While the acid refluxing into the esophagus will usually make it presence known, it may not be strong enough to cause the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease, yet still have enough strength to burn the back of the throat, eat the enamel off the teeth and cause coughing and hoarseness. Even without the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease if a person experiences other symptoms they should see a physician before any damage becomes permanent.

One of the best methods of eliminating the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease is a change in diet. Many foods contribute to increased stomach acid, such as milk, which many may believe to be a cure for indigestion. Milk can actually cause the stomach to produce more acid, increasing the symptoms.

Contrary to popular opinion, white apple cider vinegar has been shown to reduce the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux disease. It works because with the ingestion of more acid the stomach will typically believe there is enough available to do the job and stop its production. If a person can past the smell and taste of a teaspoon full of vinegar diluted in four ounces of water, they can reduce the effects of acid reflux.
