During or after meal, which is the probable time of acid reflux, the stomach is active and the acid content of the stomach is higher in children. In some children the acids reverts back to the esophagus. This causes extreme discomforts to the child. This condition in children is called as Acid reflux. Acid reflux in children is most likely to happen, as they are more prone to vomiting and spitting of foods. It is important to take notice of the symptoms in children, as they would not be the ones who would be telling it.

Symptoms in Acid reflux conditions:

Children are more likely to go through silent reflux condition in which symptoms are either not shown or not described by the child. So, it is important to have more knowledge of Acid reflux conditions and the symptoms and should be treated accordingly. Regular visits to the doctor for child health can also help in detecting Acid reflux problems in children. However, the common signs and symptoms that can be displayed by the child are.

1. Pain: Due to irritability or constant crying or from abdominal pain in the belly button the child could suffer from pain. Otherwise there could be chest pain or burning sensation on the esophagus or back arching.

2. Vomiting: Vomiting frequently or spitting up can be looked as a symptom for Acid reflux.

3. Eating: Eating less food despite hunger or abhorrence of particular food, choosy about the food while eating, weight loss can be indications for Acid Reflux.

4. Respiratory: Respiratory problems like bad breath, runny nose, frequent sore throat, asthma, night cough, hoarse or deep voice wheezing and bronchitis can be the symptoms relating to acid reflux problems.

5. Other symptoms: Other symptoms prevailing in Acid reflux diseases in children could be frequent ear infections, dental erosions, excessive drooling in babies and excessive salivation.

Precaution:

It is important to have a precaution regarding child’s health. Since, the child may be susceptible to many diseases, having a general knowledge about the diseases is always beneficial. The greatest impediment to the diagnosis of the symptoms is the inability of the child to tell the exact symptom that he/she may go through. So, regular visit to the doctors can save the child from acid reflux and many other diseases.

While you often hear of adults suffering from acid reflux, it is certainly not uncommon for children to have the same problem. When you think it about it, it makes sense. In a normal person, food passes through the esophagus and the muscle will then close so the food can travel down in to the stomach. People with acid reflux have problems with this muscle closing properly, resulting in pain and discomfort known as acid reflux.

When children have acid reflux, they can feel quite miserable. Parents may not understand what is wrong, especially with young children who are not old enough to verbalize their needs. Luckily, with changes in the diet and medications, acid reflux in children can ease. In fact, many children with this condition will grow out of it as they age.

So, if you are a parent and your child is complaining about discomfort after a meal, how do you know what is wrong with your child? Is it the common stomachache or is it something a little more serious, like acid reflux? One way to know for certain is to look at the symptoms. The symptoms of children with acid reflux are quite telling. Many of them will complain of abdominal pain above the belly button, along with one or more of the following: chest pain, sour taste in the mouth after eating, burning feeling in the throat, weight loss or not wanting to eat particular foods and being very picky about the types of foods eaten. Other symptoms that are common among young children with acid reflux include gagging and choking when eating, recurrent bad breath despite brushing and flossing, sinus infections, wheezing and coughing, especially at night, hard stomach and recurring ear infections.

To the untrained eye, it does seem that these symptoms are rather random, but to your doctor, these symptoms will make sense. Your health care provider will be able to diagnose acid reflux in your child quite easily. After a physical exam, your pediatrician may order a series of other tests that could include an upper endoscopy, pH monitoring and lab tests such as a blood work up and a urine test. It is important that your doctor exams your child carefully to make sure the condition is not something that is more serious.

After a diagnosis of acid reflux is made, there are several treatment options for your child. First of all, you will be asked to watch your child’s diet. There may be certain foods that trigger the acid reflux, such as spicy foods. After that, your doctor may recommend over the counter antacids, such as Tums or Mylanta. The good news is that these medications are very safe for children. Acid suppressors such as Axid or Zantac may also be added to your child’s orders. Last of all, if these things do not work well, then you doctor may look at prescription acid blockers.

Work with your child’s doctor to ensure that you child is getting the care he or she needs for this condition. It is also important to understand that your child will need to understand the condition to help prevent problems.

ACID REFLUX IN CHILDREN: Acid reflux is a very painful condition that may cause serious damage to the esophagus as well as the digestive system, if it is not treated on high time. Acid reflux is not a unique thing in children; it’s inherent of any age level children. Acid reflux may cause when the stomach contents and the acid that makes a back up into the esophagus. This acid causes irritation and pain in the esophagus. It may also force the food to come out of the children’s mouth. A child may feel like vomiting by this force. Mostly it happens after feeding them.

PRECAUTION FOR ACID REFLUX IN CHILDREN: There are some most important precautions regarding acid reflux in children are:
1. Prevent their children from overfeeding. Because in children and infant the digestive system is not so developed that it can digest the food as comparison to adults. And it is also recommended by the doctors.

2. Parents should avoid giving heavy meals. Food for the children should be light and hygiene. And also it should not be sporadic, keep the difference around 3 to 4 hours in each diet.

3. It is normally observed that children tend to sleep on their stomach. This puts strain on the stomach and enhance the chance of acid reflux. Hence, try to make them sleep in a right position.

4. Avoid giving much soft drinks and chocolates. Because it creates gas in the stomach, and it may lead to acid reflux attack.

5. Avoid dressing in tight clothes. Always refer loose and comfortable clothes while sleeping, so that children should feel relaxed while sleep.

6. Do not give coffee and tea. Infact higher amount of milk can also cause acid reflux.

CONCLUSION: Acid reflux attack is common in children. The spitting up and throwing up of foods particles is a common thing that every mother must be accustomed to. Attack of acid reflux in children may cause serious damages in children. So, every mother should look properly towards their children’s diets and actives to keep off their children with acid reflux attack. And it is not very tuff to do.

The common belief is that acid reflux is a malady that affects only adults. Nothing could be further from truth. In fact, acid reflux in children is very common. Unfortunately, the regular adults do not know too much about this, complicated by the fact that children do not know how to express themselves and explain what they feel, makes this a hidden disease.

How Can You Find Out Whether Your Child Is Suffering From Acid Reflux?

Before you go for diagnostics, learn a little about what characterizes acid reflux in children. This occurs when the acid contained in the stomach for the digestion of food, with or without food, rises up the alimentary canal which is also called as esophagus. There is a ‘little gate’ at the upper end of the stomach, which is meant to keep the food inside till it is digested. There is another ‘little gate’ at the end of the mouth which is meant to keep the food in the mouth till it is ready to be swallowed.

These two little gates are the most crucial players in the acid reflux in children. While the upper esophageal sphincter (the gate at the end of the mouth) opens to let the food in, many times the other gate, the lower esophageal sphincter, also opens. This is totally independent of the upper gate’s movement, but when it happens, the acid and food from the stomach, will come up in the alimentary canal. This upwards movement creates a strong burning sensation which the adults recognize and interpret as acidity.

Unfortunately, acid reflux in children goes undetected for a long time simply because the children do not know what is happening and do not know how to express themselves well. By the time they are able to explain, the acid reflux in children will disappear. Watch closely the child when he/she is eating, and when they are on empty stomach. Ask them if they feel the food coming back into the mouth, if they ever feel their chest burning after eating. If any of these answers are, “yes”, then it would be good if you show your child to a specialist or pediatrician.

The Diagnosis Of Acid Reflux In Children

The diagnosis is based on a series of tests which include Barium and X-ray Test and/or endoscopy. These tests will help the doctor identify where and what could be the problem, for which the food regurgitated. If the diagnosis is found to be positive, then there would be another test following, i.e. the test which would measure the amount of acidity the stomach contains, so the doctors can judge what type of treatment he/she should prescribe.

Acid reflux affects many adults, and doesn’t stop there. Children are just as affected by acid reflux as adults are. The biggest difference is that children don’t always recognize the symptoms on their own and don’t know how to tell you what’s wrong. When this happens, there’s no way to go about fixing the problem which can irritate the acid reflux and make it worse.

It’s important to know the acid reflux symptoms in children that are recognizable to you, so you can help your child deal with the disease. There are a few clues to look for, and ways to teach your child how to help you understand what’s going on with them.

What to Look For

When looking for acid reflux symptoms in children, you’ll want to pay close attention at meal time. This is when you may notice your child slow down after eating a few bites, or looking uncomfortable when swallowing their food. They may be experiencing heartburn but they aren’t quite sure what’s going on.

In order to try and get your children to tell you their acid reflux symptoms, you’ll have to do a little poking and prodding. Let them know what heartburn feels like and ask them if they have any feelings like it at all. If they insist they don’t, it’s a best bet to have them looked at by a doctor just to make sure.

Excessive burping is another acid reflux symptom in children that you should look for. If an over the counter indigestion medication helps with the burping, chances are that you’ve found a symptom of acid reflux in your child. It’s a good sign to let you know that you should take your child to the doctor to talk about acid reflux disease.

Acid Reflux Symptoms in Children Aren’t Always Proof

Just because child may display acid reflux symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they have the disease. As mentioned before, a doctor is always your best bet but if you’re not prepared to visit a doctor you should make sure to take steps in knowing whether there is really something to worry about.

Changing your child’s diet and offering a healthier diet is a good way to determine whether these kinds of things will cure your child’s symptoms. Using over the counter medications is fine as long as you’re not giving them to your child excessively. If you are, chances are their symptoms of acid reflux are true and should be dealt with by their doctor.

While acid reflux is typically something that adults suffer from research has show children can experience it as well. In fact, some infants have been diagnosed with acid reflux when they are only a couple of months old. Most of us are familiar with seeing babies spit up from time to time. If it is occurring on a regular basis it could be a sign of acid reflux.

Most infants are very irritable when they suffer from acid reflux. You may find it extremely difficult to console them. They may suffer from it more when they are lying down too which is why they could fall to sleep when you rock them on your shoulder. Many parents mistake acid reflux in their infant for colic. The symptoms are quite similar and most of us don’t think of acid reflux and small children together.

For most infants acid reflux is something they outgrow as they get older. Their stomach is then able to digest foods easier. For others though a doctor will have to run tests to find out what the problem is. They can test the levels of acid that is in the esophagus to give them a good indication. If there is inflammation in the esophagus medication may be necessary to treat it.

As children get older they are often introduced to a variety of new foods. That is why they can end up developing acid reflux. Certain foods may not sit well with their body. This is especially true when they are consuming spicy foods or even large amounts of fresh fruits with acid in them. They should also drink water each day instead of just sugary juices and sodas.

There are plenty of hormonal changes taking place for teenagers and that can trigger acid reflux for them. It may go away once they get through puberty but in the mean time it can be painful and distracting for them. Most teenagers don’t have the best eating habits either and that can further irritate their acid reflux. If they are using drugs or consuming alcohol then the problem will become chronic for them.

More medical professionals out there are aware of how acid reflux can affect children these days. That means you have a better chance of getting the right diagnosis. Parents need to be educated that this can be a problem for their child as well. The symptoms of acid reflux in children can vary as can the severity of them.

Some of the most common ones include pain in the chest, especially when they try to go to sleep. They may complaint of burning sensations, a sore throat, pain in their ears, and the inability to get a good night of sleep. Pay attention to these concerns so you can find out if acid reflux is to blame. You want to offer your child relief so they can feel their best and get the rest they need at night.

Generally acid reflux in children can be resolved with over the counter medications that neutralize stomach acid. If that isn’t effective a doctor can recommend prescription medications that prevent the acid from being produced in the stomach. Changes in diet and making sure they don’t eat meals in the hours before bed time will also help them to avoid it.

Studies reveal that Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER), generally called Acid Reflux, is common among children of varying age groups, though acid reflux in children,

Studies reveal that Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER), generally called Acid Reflux, is common among children of varying age groups, though acid reflux in children, especially in infants, may be overlooked easily. An estimated 7,000,000 children in the US currently suffer from GER. Children’s immature digestive systems are easy victims to acid reflux and as they grow up (up to one or two years of age), most children naturally come out of the problem. In case the child’s complaints continue, treatment by a pediatrician will be in need.

Nature Of Acid Reflux

In acid reflux, stomach contents i.e. food and gastric acid flow back up out of the stomach into the esophagus causing irritation and discomfort. The food coming up may or may not flow out of the child’s mouth. As a result, the child may vomit forcefully or have a wet burp that does not reach the mouth.

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux In Children

Many different symptoms can show in cases of acid reflux in children. The more common symptoms include: pain, irritability, sudden crying, colic; frequent vomiting or just spitting-up; inability to eat despite hunger; poor sleep; emission of wet burp or wet hiccup sounds; bad breath.

Less common symptoms include: difficulty in swallowing, gagging, and/or choking; sore throat and the need for constant eating and drinking to soothe it; poor weight gain, weight loss; hoarse voice; respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, noisy breathing, pneumonia etc.; ear infections, sinus infections, excessive salvation, drooling, and peculiar neck arching.

Reflux Condition And Complications In Acid Reflux In Children

In many young babies, regurgitation of a little milk, especially when burping after meals, is a common condition. It is not a bog problem until complications appear. Complications show up mostly in form of heartburn and esophagitis. Heartburn is the burning sensation resulting from the flow of acid from stomach into the esophagus. Esophagitis is the reddening and swelling of the esophagus due to acid reflux. It is very painful and can kill appetite. Severe esophagitis also causes bleeding from the inflamed part of the esophagus. Other complications include poor growth, trouble in swallowing, respiratory problems, and melting of tooth enamel leading to tooth decay.

Treatment Of Acid Reflux In Children

Different treatment methods are used for dealing with GER in children. Most children come out of the reflux situation after they get a year old. Till then, proper positioning and feeding techniques will do to provide relief. Children are to be positioned upright such that gravity does not allow flow of food and acid from the stomach into the esophagus. Frequent burping and avoiding spicy, fatty and acidic foods is also needed in coping with acid reflux in children. A variety of medications are used for treating acid reflux, e.g. antacids, motility medicines, acid suppressors, and acid blockers. In very severe cases of reflux, surgery is performed.
