We all love to eat and eat many different types of food, some of which can be unhealthy for us and some may even cause acid reflux. Food is not the only thing that we love that can lead to acid reflux. Are you guilty of loving any of the causes of acid reflux?
There are many things that can cause acid reflux including a relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which is what allows food and drink into the stomach and is suppose to close after letting it in so that the stomach contents and stomach acid do not make their way back up through the LES and into the esophagus.
Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter is weakened or forced open by certain foods or diet choices. Everyone will have their own triggers when it comes to acid reflux, however there are certain foods that cause acid reflux in the majority of those who suffer from the affliction.
Caffeine may not be considered a food, but it is high on the list of foods that cause acid reflux. This includes coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages. Sadly, these are vices for many people. Some can barely stand to face the day before a cup of coffee or three. Carbonated beverages are almost addictive.
