Acid Reflux And Indigestion:

Acid reflux is a physiological condition that causes the content of the stomach to reflux back into the esophagus and throat. There are many more factors that contribute to the development of acid reflux; the main cause is inappropriate activity of the lower esophageal sphincter. Additional causes of acid reflux are inappropriate diets, unhealthy living standard or other physical dysfunction and conditions. Eating too quickly, especially when the food is full of fat, typically causes indigestion. Indigestion can be felt as a burning sensation in the upper portion of the stomach, general nausea, bloated, heartburn and among others a bitter taste can result in the mouth from stomach acid that is coming up into the esophagus.

Acid reflux is a condition in which the acid in the stomach regurgitates towards the esophagus. This esophagus lining cannot handle the acidity of the food products and gastric juices. Due to this severe irritations in form of chest pain or heartburns occur. In acid reflux conditions, care must be taken that proper food that doesn’t increase gastric juices should be taken. The food products that increase the gastric acids can be anything from sour foods, fried foods, tobacco and coffee. In recent studies, it has been found that soft drinks also alleviate the problems of acid reflux.

The main factors which cause GERD are the strength of the muscles of the lower oesophagus (lower oesophageal sphincter), the emptying of the stomach, defective oesophageal contractions and hiatal hernias, which can also cause reflux.

In simple terms, the contents of the stomach including the acids produced are back to the esophagus. The linings of the esophagus are not designed to handle the acids as like linings in the stomach. Long term presence of the acids damage the linings of the esophagus. Due to such conditions an individual may experience heartburns, and other chronic symptoms. Prolonged exposure of the stomach acids in the esophagus can cause serious complications in the future.

Some can barely stand to face the day before a cup of coffee or three. Carbonated beverages are almost addictive. Giving up these comforts can be difficult, but will certainly help alleviate occurrences of acid reflux.

We all can experience a little bit of acid reflux if we eat a big meal and then immediately bend over, or lie down flat on our back afterwards and then all of a sudden feel that acid coming back up our throat; especially if we just finished a large meal that contained foods high in fat, had lots of acid in them or were very spicy.
