Clinical approach in Acid reflux
Clinical approach in Acid reflux
Acid reflux is the most common cause for chest pain other than heart attack. This is caused by the stomach juices and acids regurgitates back to the esophagus which is not able to deal with the acidity of the juices. This ultimately leads to burning sensation in the chest and discomfort in the area from heart up to the stomach. It is a chronic disease and it is likely that the time the person visits the doctor the esophagus is damaged. Treatments curb the problems for the time being but if stopped the problems comes back. There should be proper clinical method for finding whether the symptoms are for GERD or not.
Clinical approach:
A clinical approach is a way that a doctor would approach when consulted for symptoms related to acid reflux. They can be as:
1. Diagnosis of symptoms: Since heartburn is the most common symptom for acid reflux problems, the person could be prescribed medicines that reduce the acid formation. If the problems of chest pain stops then it can be verified that the person is suffering from acids reflux problems. But this approach is not reliable.
2. A Biopsy: biopsy is generally carried for finding the cancer in the body. But it can also help to find out whether the damage done is due to acid reflux or not. Usually by this methods alternative evidence of acid reflux problems can be found out.
3. An endoscopy: an endoscopy is a method in which a tube is swallowed through esophagus. It shows the inner parts of the body generally from mouth till the intestines. It can help to find out that the problems faced by the patient are related to acid reflux or not.
4. Examining the throat can be sometimes considered for the diagnosis for the acids reflux tests. Inflammation in the throat and the larynx can detect the Acid reflux.
5. Esophageal acid testing is more accurate test that can be done for diagnosis of Acid reflux disease. It is an obtrusive method in which a tube is placed through the esophagus where it remains for 24 hours. This tube has sensors that measure the amount of acid reflux that is generated over 24 hours.
These are the tests that diagnose the conditions of acid reflux. They are critical as they determine the damage done to the esophagus. After such diagnosis, then only type of medications can be determined depending upon the condition and the severity of the case.
