There are quite a few different causes of acid reflux out there and that is why millions of people do suffer from it. They may only have an occasional bout with it or have to deal with it all the time. However, learning what the core reasons are for your acid reflux means you will be able eliminate it from being as frequent or as severe.

When a person suffers from acid reflux, there is acid that comes from the stomach to the esophagus. Some individuals have medical concerns that need to be addressed. They include the development of ulcers or a hernia. It can also be the result of the rings around the esophagus not opening or closing when they should.

In such instances the individuals will need to seek medical attention. It is possible that with medication they will be able to solve the problem. The longer that the problem goes undetected and untreated though the more damage it is going to cause. In the most severe cases surgery may be necessary in order to resolve the problem.

For most people though the causes of acid reflux has to do with their lifestyle choices. Mainly it is their choice of foods that they consume. Most of us don’t have the healthiest diet and our bodies suffer because of it. Consuming too much fatty meats or fried foods is going to trigger acid reflux.

Consuming large amounts of sugar, caffeine, chocolate, and peppermint can cause the rings of the esophagus to become weak. As a result they aren’t able to keep acid out like they should. It isn’t just what you eat though as how much you eat can cause it as well. Most people tend to overeat when they skip a meal so don’t do this. By eating smaller meals all day you will never be starving and your body can digest foods easier.

Avoid lying down or sleeping right after a meal too. This can result in the acid needed for digestion to end up back in the esophagus. Individuals that have habits including smoking, drinking alcohol, or using illegal drugs are continually damaging the esophagus. This will make it weak and susceptible to many different things. In fact, you could end up with cancer in the esophagus if it is very weak.

Take care of your mental health needs as well. When you suffer from excessive stress in your life it can make you feel sick to your stomach. That is because of the additional amounts of acid that are produced. Since there is more of it you can end up with acid reflux as a result of it.

When there is excessive pressure on the stomach area that acid has more influence to move back into the esophagus as well. There are several different causes of this but the most common one is being overweight. Do your best to shed those additional pounds and you will find you suffer less from acid reflux. Wearing clothing that is extremely tight or lifting and bending all day long can also be responsible for causing it.

Now that you are aware of the causes of acid reflux, you can do your best to avoid them. If you aren’t able to get results on your own then definitely see a medical professional. There is no reason to continue letting acid reflux affect your life. You also don’t want to allow serious medical problems to continue getting worse because you failed to deal with them early on.

Understanding the causes of acid reflux means a simple anatomy lesson is needed. When food enters the stomach, it passes through the esophageal sphincter. The esophageal sphincter then closes, allowing for digestion to take place. Sometimes, certain foods and situations can cause the esophageal sphincter to weaken or pressure pushes it open. When this occurs, the contents of the stomach or stomach juices are able to rise back up through the esophageal sphincter. These are the true causes of acid reflux.

Foods and Situations that are Causes of Acid Reflux

Tomatoes and tomato-based foods are prime offenders as causes of acid reflux. These foods cause the esophageal sphincter to weaken. The acidity of tomato-based foods doesn’t help. Tomato based foods are widely enjoyed and a staple in many cultures. They are quite difficult to avoid, but are one of the main causes of acid reflux.

Caffeine is high on the list of causes of acid reflux. This means coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages are all potential causes of acid reflux. These drinks are beloved by the majority of the population and many people refuse to even consider lowering their intake or quitting entirely. This means taking precautions to prevent the acid reflux from occurring.

Other common foods that are the causes of acid reflux include fried foods, fatty foods, and even chocolate. Fried and fatty foods take longer to digest than other foods, causing them to sit in the stomach longer. This puts added pressure on the stomach and in turn puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter. It can be hard for people to accept that they must adjust their diet in order to stave off acid reflux.

There are also situations that can be avoided. These situations are also major causes of acid reflux. One is eating too much. When the stomach is too full, it puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter. It is also important to not eat within two to three hours before lying down. This allows the contents of the stomach to rise up. These to situations can be easily avoided.

Once the causes of acid reflux are known, it is easier to prevent occurrences. This can be done by avoiding these foods and situations or by taking medications. There are medications that can be prescribed by a physician or over the counter medications that can be bought at the store. Knowing the causes of acid reflux can make life much less painful.

Acid reflux is the common term for gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD, the condition of abnormal reflux that causes mucosal damages

Acid reflux is the common term for gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD, the condition of abnormal reflux that causes mucosal damages. This disease can affect both adults and children or infants, but gives high vulnerability to pregnant women, smokers and people who doze off right after eating without prior rest.

The symptoms of acid reflux are as follows: heartburn, which is characterized by chest pain; inflammation in the mucosa; difficulty in swallowing; cough and hoarseness. These symptoms are felt by the infected person after eating a fatty meal or drinking liquor, when bending, and worse when constantly smoking.

Acid reflux is primarily caused by the malfunction of the esophageal sphincter. In other cases, it can also be brought about by the abnormal production of the gastric acids. If there is insufficient supply of the stomach acid, the valve in the stomach responsible for churning up foods to the intestine does not open up. This irritates the esophagus and leads to inflammation.

Some of the factors that can trigger acid reflux are hiatus hernia, zollinger-elison syndrome, hypercalcemia, scleroderma and systemic sclerosis.

According to paradoxical beliefs, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee can lead to gastro esophageal reflux. But recent studies show that although individuals already infected by this disease can be aggravated by alcohol, tea and coffee, these elements do not cause the disease. Compared to smoking which amplifies the risks of getting the disease, alcohol, tea and coffee had the least impact. But this doesn’t mean that GERD infected people are free to take the beverages stated above. Doctors still suggest avoiding drinking of alcohol in order to shun further aggravation.

Smoking is the chief culprit that causes acid reflux disease. Regular smokers for twenty years are 70% susceptible to acid reflux disease compared to non-smokers. And symptoms of those who already developed the GERD are worsened day by day due to smoking.

The highlight of the research is that great amounts of salts are found to be equivalent to regular smoking in terms of the risk of developing GERD. It is not a common knowledge that table salts can cause acid reflux disease but researchers found out in their studies that people who are constantly using extra salt are 70% at risk to have gastro esophageal reflux disease. Gastroenterologists of New York University Medical Center attested this fact.

Gastro esophageal reflux disease can be diagnosed even by the infected person himself through the appearance of the symptoms. In the occurrence of these symptoms, it is advised to undergo the tests conducted by medical experts to clear doubts of having the disease or to carry out possible treatments. To treat this kind of disorder, there are varieties of ways possible. It can be cured by prescribed drugs such as antacids, by natural way such as change of diet system, elevation of the head when lying down, or to the utmost is surgery. And of course, it will be best to stop or avoid smoking and drinking alcohol especially to people who are vulnerable to acid reflux disease.

Gastro esophageal reflux disease causes a lot of discomfort that it can ruin even your lifestyle. To avoid its bad effects, precautionary measures should be considered. The clich? quote that prevention is better than cure applies always.

Acid Reflux And Indigestion:

Acid reflux is a physiological condition that causes the content of the stomach to reflux back into the esophagus and throat. There are many more factors that contribute to the development of acid reflux; the main cause is inappropriate activity of the lower esophageal sphincter. Additional causes of acid reflux are inappropriate diets, unhealthy living standard or other physical dysfunction and conditions. Eating too quickly, especially when the food is full of fat, typically causes indigestion. Indigestion can be felt as a burning sensation in the upper portion of the stomach, general nausea, bloated, heartburn and among others a bitter taste can result in the mouth from stomach acid that is coming up into the esophagus.

Difference In Acid Reflux And Indigestion:

There are many conditions of the both acid reflux and indigestion to mean the same thing. But there are number of differences between the acid reflux and indigestion. Acid reflux can be a serious condition if people will not take the proper treatment of it. Acid reflux is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Mostly people who suffer with this have pain in the esophagus and throat as an acid from the stomach causes damage to the lining. If people will not do the treatment on time, the symptoms can become unbearable as the lining of the esophagus is slowly eroded away by the stomach acid. Over-eating too quickly commonly causes indigestion. Stomach is bombarded with food and it produces acid in extreme amount. Indigestion is often thought to be a similar version of acid reflux. But this is not really true. Only some cardinal symptoms are same. One of the most common symptoms of indigestion is a gassy episode and often sufferers of true acid reflux feel these episodes. Indigestion sufferers may also have a problem feeling around chest and shoulder area.

Conclusion:

Mostly people think that indigestion and acid reflux are the same. Both the problem are generally caused by eating too much or quickly. Although they have same similar symptoms but there are many differences between them.

Acid reflux is one of the most common diseases that cause heart burns in the chest. Sometimes it can get more severe as if the person is experiencing a heart attack. Acid reflux is a condition in which the acid in the stomach regurgitates towards the esophagus. This esophagus lining cannot handle the acidity of the food products and gastric juices. Due to this severe irritations in form of chest pain or heartburns occur. In acid reflux conditions, care must be taken that proper food that doesn’t increase gastric juices should be taken. The food products that increase the gastric acids can be anything from sour foods, fried foods, tobacco and coffee. In recent studies, it has been found that soft drinks also alleviate the problems of acid reflux.

Problems related to soft drinks:

Soft drinks are carbonated products that are consumed in large amount by the people. There are also cases of people getting addicted to cold drinks. The problem with cold drink that increases the reflux problems is that it is a gas producing and acid producing item. It facilitates acid production in the stomach. In some people more quantity of acid is produced than required. This reverts back to the esophagus causing heartburns. Soft drinks have carbonated contents that are related with heartburns. Weight problems and acid reflux are closely associated as weight puts more pressures in the valve that causes it to open. Among soft drink users weight gain is a common problem as they consume unnecessary calories and this increases the weight. A survey was carried out to know how many soft drink users have acid reflux problems and a staggering amount of people have heartburns. This study concluded that acid reflux has some connections with acid reflux but the exact connections could not be found out. Studies showed that a can of soda a day corresponds to 53. 3 minutes of elevated acid levels in the stomach.

Avoiding soft drinks:

The best ways of reducing the acid reflux problems are to avoid the foods causing it. Soft drinks are one of them. Instead of drinking soft drinks that have carbonated contents having natural drinks that have the pulps and the juices of the fruits. That will not only reduce the problems in acid reflux but would balance the health of the person.

If you or a loved one suffers from acid reflux you will find yourself asking what are the causes of acid reflux?

Everyone experiences temporary acid reflux as a result of overeating, participating in drinking or smoking or being stressed out to the point of experiencing mental or emotional stress. All of these can be causes for acid reflux. Other causes for acid reflux include abnormal biologic or structural factors.

One cause for acid reflux can be malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter the LES muscles. This is the band of muscle that allows food to flow from esophagus to stomach and this is one reason why acid reflux exists. A weak muscle value will allow stomach content to back up into the esophagus. There are many things that can affect this muscle as in dietary substances, use of certain medications, and nervous system factors that weaken the muscle as well cause some malfunction to the sphincter muscle.

Another cause is impaired stomach function, which is another abnormality where the stomach muscles do not contract normally in order to mix food. There is usually a delay in emptying of the stomach and of course the chance for back up of contents.

Another abnormality that may cause acid reflux is an abnormality of the esophagus. Symptoms of an abnormality of the esophagus are hoarseness, a chronic cough, and having to clear the throat numerous. There may also be motility problems within the esophagus, which prevents the food from getting into the stomach.

Hiatal hernia is another cause for acid reflex.

This is where there is a small hole in the diaphragm that allows stomach contents and acid escape and back up into the esophagus. Part of the stomach emerges called the “hiatal hernia”.

Genetic factors may also be at the root of acid reflux and include both inherited muscular and structural problems of the stomach or esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is a prime example of genetic factors influences the cause of acid reflux.

Asthma is another cause for acid reflux. Researchers believe that it is the coughing and sneezing of the asthma that may initiate changes in the physical trigger for the acid reflux. Drug prescribed for the asthma can also have an impact on the function of the muscles that control the emptying of the stomach contents and the chance for back up into the esophagus.

A chronic disease called, Crohn’s disease may be a cause for the condition.

Other conditions that may have a bearing on acid reflux are diabetes, and any gastrointestinal disorder, cancer, lymphomas, and peptic ulcer.

Certain medications can lead to the risk to cause acid reflux including NSAIDs. An occasional pill will not harm anyone; it is the constant use of certain medications that may contribute to acid reflux.

Acid reflux caused due to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is relaxed; stomach acid splashes up the stomach in to the esophagus causing pain and heartburn. Acid reflux is related to the digestive system, physiologically, stress can cause the digestive system to come screeching halt. People under stress also are likely to be more aware of heartburn symptoms

Causes of stress

Stress causes to experience changes in behavior like immoderate consumption of alcohol and so called “comfort foods”. It can also lead to late night binging and excessive smoking. All of these lead to the triggers and symptoms of acid reflux producing excessive acid in the stomach. Stress causes body to tense up, delivering most of its energy to heart, lungs and muscles. This intensifies hyperacidity, as stomach is robbed of oxygen and enzymes necessary for proper digestion. In stressful times, routines are disrupted and people may forget their normal patterns as related to meals, exercise and medication.
Here are few reminders to help the sufferers to control heartburn symptoms during especially stressful times.

Meals- stress can affect the motility or the movement of food through the digestive system. It causes acidic stomach content to linger in the stomach allowing more times for acid reflux to occur. By minimizing intake of high fats food and foods that are particularly spicy, limit consumption of caffeine, carbonated and alcoholic beverages.
Exercise- exercise not only helps to alleviate stress but it can decrease heartburn as well. Physical activity helps the digestive system moving, as it should. Exercises should be performed at least two hours after and before meals.
Medications- Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can relax the LES and allow stomach juices to flow upwards into the esophagus, esophagus it to harsh acid. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can increase the incidence of the heartburn. Also, some antibiotics and iron tablets aggravates symptoms of the acid reflux.

The Steps for non- stress exacerbating conditions,

1. Take the pressure off yourself.
2. Exercise to peace the mind.
3. Get massage- acupuncture is very relaxing.
4. Talk to friend – a very therapeutic when trusted friends gives advice. Sympathy from friends and relatives has calming affect and can reduce stress. Encouragements are invaluable.

The causes of GERD are not straightforward. In many cases, there may be several causes contributing to the problem. In some patients it will be to do with over-production of acid, although this is relatively rare. The main factors which cause GERD are the strength of the muscles of the lower oesophagus (lower oesophageal sphincter), the emptying of the stomach, defective oesophageal contractions and hiatal hernias, which can also cause reflux.

The lower oesophageal sphincter, or LES is the most crucial factor within the mechanism for stopping acid reflux. It control the passage between the oesophagus and the stomach, and opens to let food enter whilst closing primarily to block reflux. If this muscle is weakened this can lead to increased reflux, and can be the result of a specific more complex medical complaint, and can be classified in two distinct categories: weakened contractions and abnormal relaxations.

With weakened contractions, the LES does not do enough to prevent reflux from occurring, as the can last for a considerable period and do not accompany the swallow. Extended periods of relaxation allow reflux to flow, as the LES remains open for a considerable period. These are seen as the main abnormalities which can occur as a result of weakened oesophageal muscles.

Another contributory factor to reflux is the hiatal hernias, which the majority of GERD patients will suffer from. It is unclear why these hernias develop in patients of GERD, but they’re effects are almost fully understood. When a hiatal hernia is present, part of the stomach has pushed up into the diaphragm which partitions the abdomen from the chest. The diaphragm is a key factor in preventing reflux and works with the LES to ensure any reflux is kept to a minimum. In patients with the hernia, this process is lessened because of its affects on the diaphragm, which leads to increased reflux. The fact that a portion of the stomach is pushed into the diaphragm means that it is ideally suited to trapping acid, which can again lead to acid reflux which higher volumes of acid remaining close to the lining of the oesophagus.

The contraction of the oesophagus is an important feature of the digestive process. It forces food down towards the stomach, where digestion can begin. Patients with GERD can sometimes find that the root of their problem lies in defective contractions of the oesophagus, which as a result fail to push reflux back towards the stomach for whatever reason. It could be to do with the weakened pressure of the muscular contractions, or perhaps have developed as a result of smoking which tends to trap acid within the oesophagus for up to five to six hours.

There are many different causes of this uncomfortable condition. Because of the acidic nature of the complaint, patients will often feel a burning sensation, and may be oblivious as to the reasons they are feeling this discomfort. It is best to consult your medical professional, who will have a better idea as to the precise cause of your reflux, and will be better placed to offer a diagnosis and effective course of treatment.

Acid reflux is a condition in which damage is caused to esophagus linings produced by abnormal reflux of the acids produced in the stomach. In simple terms, the contents of the stomach including the acids produced are back to the esophagus. The linings of the esophagus are not designed to handle the acids as like linings in the stomach. Long term presence of the acids damage the linings of the esophagus. Due to such conditions an individual may experience heartburns, and other chronic symptoms. Prolonged exposure of the stomach acids in the esophagus can cause serious complications in the future.

It’s Causes:

The root cause of acid reflex problems is poor diet that individuals follow. It causes acidity and indigestion. Too much acid pushes the Lower esophageal Valve (LES) that is between the stomach and the esophagus. It allows the entry of acids and foods in to the esophagus. There are foods that typically cause acid reflux. Excess and overeating of such foods leads to acid reflex problems. The foods that cause acid reflux are coffee, tea, and chocolate, Fried and fatty foods, Tomato and tomato based products, tobacco, large meals, citrus fruits and juices. These foods produce more acid in the stomach and overeating of these foods causes its entry in the esophagus. There are also other factors that cause acid reflux. Overeating also causes acid reflux problems. Because of overeating more amount of acid is formed in the stomach, which is already full thus causing entry to the esophageal canal. So foods get backed up and bring an unpleasant burning feeling in the chest. Being overweight also causes acid reflux problems. There is a clear correlation between overweight and acid reflux problems. By being overweight, more pressure is put on the esophageal valve causing it to open. This also allows acid entry in the esophagus. Eating in 2-3 hours prior to sleeping also causes acid reflux problems. Wearing tight clothes that squeeze the abdomen creating pressure also causes acid reflux problems.

Problems faced due to acid reflux:

Reoccurrence of acid reflux could cause diseases related to acid reflux. Heartburn is the common occurrences in acid reflux diseases. Individual may feel excessive pain in the chest and trouble in swallowing. It can also cause dry cough and bad breath. These problems if are diagnosed earlier, effective treatment can be carried out in order to prevent diseases related to acid reflux.

Everyone has heard of acid reflux at one time or another, whether he or she or someone he or she knows has experienced it personally. But, what is acid reflux? Acid reflux is when the contents of the stomach or stomach juices rise back up through the lower esophageal sphincter. This causes an irritation that feels like a burning sensation. Since the heart is in close proximity, acid reflux is commonly called heartburn.

Some people have been known to go to the emergency room when the acid reflux causes intense pain. Often, they feel as if they are having a heart attack. They become surprised to hear that what they have is a condition known as acid reflux. The common question then becomes “what is acid reflux?” When the doctor explains that it is simply heartburn, most people feel much better about the diagnosis.

What is Acid Reflux and What Can be Done About it?

Once someone has come to terms with acid reflux and fully understand what acid reflux is, they are ready to fight back against flare-ups. They will first need to discover the foods that trigger their personal experience with heartburn. The most common offenders are fried foods, fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, and tomato based foods. Keeping a notebook handy to track occurrences of acid reflux will help lessen the flare-ups.

There are other reasons for acid reflux to occur. It is important to not lie down after eating a meal. It is suggested to not lie down within two to three hours of eating. It is also a good idea to not eat too much. Both of these cause pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, weakening it, and allowing for stomach contents to rise back up. This is exactly what acid reflux is and easy ways to avoid it.

When acid reflux becomes a common occurrence and causes extreme pain, then a trip to the doctor is necessary. The doctor will describe in detail what acid reflux is and likely show a chart that explains what happens when the lower esophageal sphincter is weakened. At this point, the doctor will often prescribe a medication to be taken daily in order to stave off heartburn before it occurs. For those people who do not want to visit the doctor or have only few occasions of acid reflux can purchase over the counter medications. Some of these medications can be taken daily. Others should be taken right before a meal, and others are taken at the onset of acid reflux.

What is acid reflux? This question has been thoroughly answered. Armed with knowledge, anyone can combat this horrible condition through medication or simple changes in diet.
