Acid reflux is an adverse medical condition that affects the upper most part of the digestive track. This uppermost part of the digestive track includes the stomach and the esophagus.

Episodes of acid reflux can occur when an individual eats certain types of acidic foods. These foods could be tomatoes, onions, certain types of fruit, etc. In addition, acid reflux may be caused by smoking, overeating or by being overweight.

Basically, acid reflux is the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Obviously, this is not natural and may ultimately lead to ulcerations of the esophageal lining of the esophagus.

The basic symptom that is experienced when an individual has acid reflux is a burning sensation of the esophagus with the possibility of the acid entering into the mouth. Another common symptom that is sometimes experienced by individuals is burping with acid reflux.

Burping with acid reflux can not only be an annoying symptom but can be a source of embarrassment especially when involved in social functions. Therefore, it is important to recognize this symptom as being associated with the condition of acid reflux and knowing what are the treatment options available.

Recognizing Burping With Acid Reflux

It is important to understand that gas in the stomach or burping is a common occurrence for most individuals. The gas in the stomach can be caused by swallowing air or by eating certain types of food. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between non-acid reflux burping versus burping with acid reflux.

Associated burping with acid reflux is caused when the acid in a person’s stomach travels backwards into the esophagus. This in turn causes a burning feeling in the chest area. If this excess acid travels into the mouth it is then expelled from the body in gaseous form. This is the way to detect whether an individual’s burping is normal or associated with acid reflux.

In addition, the gas that is released through this process can be extremely strong and very bad in odor. Often, an individual who is experiencing this symptom with acid reflux becomes accustomed to the process and becomes desensitized to the extreme odor that this condition can create.

Treatment

Obviously, the treatment of burping with acid reflux needs to be addressed in order to maintain the healthy integrity of the uppermost part of the digestive system. Therefore, it is important to not only treat the symptoms, but the cause of acid reflux.

The symptoms and condition of acid reflux can be met by undertaking a change in lifestyle practices as well as a change in dietary habits. Therefore, it is important to eat in moderation. In addition, a way to control acid reflux is by eating smaller meals more frequently during the course of the day. Also, foods to avoid are those foods that add to the acidity of the digestive process or drinking of carbonated beverages.

Changes in lifestyle could include avoiding the use of tobacco or elevating the upper portion of the body by 8 inches when retiring for the night.

Other treatments that can be utilized to address the symptom and cause of burping with acid reflux can be the use of medication. This medication can be over the counter products such as antacids or the use of prescription medicines that help to minimize the secretion of acid.

While acid reflux affects both men and women, there seems to be some information out there indicating that men suffer from it more. Learning why this is so can help men find a way to get relief from it. The biggest issue is that many of them assume they just have to deal with acid reflux as they get older.

They don’t realize they can take action to get relief from it. They also don’t realize that they need to take such action so that they don’t allow damage to their esophagus to take place. Acid reflux can become very serious if it is left untreated so getting that information into the hands of men is very important.

Men tend to eat more than women in most cases, and that can cause them to also suffer from acid reflux more. Due to consuming more foods there has to be more acid created in the stomach to digest it. This acid backing into the esophagus is what results in acid reflux. Men are also more likely to eat late at night before going to bed which is a prime factor for acid reflux.

Sleeping on your back can trigger acid reflux and many men do so. Lying on the left side is more likely to help you digest while you sleep and reduce acid that could lead to acid reflux. It can be hard to get into the habit of sleeping in a different position though. One way that man men can get relief from night time acid reflux is to elevate their head and shoulders above the rest of their body.

Habits such as smoking and consuming alcohol significantly increase the risk of acid reflux for men. The more they drink and the longer span of time that they have been smoking are factors to consider. Reducing the use of such items or completely eliminating them can help reduce the effects of acid reflux. The esophagus becomes weak when exposed to such activities.

Many men work in dangerous environments where they may be exposed to a variety of chemicals. These chemicals that they breathe in can also weaken the esophagus so more acid is allowed to enter it from the stomach. Make sure proper safety equipment is used at work as well as when working with various chemicals at home.

Men that are overweight are more likely to suffer from acid reflux than those that aren’t. This is due to the pressure on the stomach from the additional weight. Engaging in a successful plan for weight loss by eating right and getting more exercise can help to lessen this pressure.

Some men do know they have a serious problem with acid reflux. Yet they have heard that certain medications for it can result in impotency. Therefore they aren’t willing to take such medications. If that is a concern talk to your doctor about it. They can help you find a medication that works well without such a side effect.

There is no reason for men to simply deal with acid reflux. Instead they need to take an inventory of their own lifestyle and habits. Doing so will help them see where they can make changes on their own. If this doesn’t offer relief than using over the counter products may be necessary. It is a good idea to see a doctor to rule out serious medical concerns as well. Prescription medications for acid reflux may be just what many males out there need.

Have you ever heard of acid reflux? You probably have. Acid reflux is also known by a couple of other names. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn are all forms of acid reflux. Chances are, if you are like most people, you have had acid reflux at least one or twice. If you are unlucky enough to be like many people, you have chronic problems with this.

You have heard of acid reflux and you know that most of the time you will need to take some type of medication, such as antacids to alleviate the sour stomach or burning sensation that you feel. You also know that there are some foods that will cause you to have more problems than other. If you are among those that have acid reflux only occasionally, then you probably do not even give acid reflux a second though unless you have it. However, do you really know what acid reflux, or GERD is?

GERD, or acid reflux, is a problem has to do with the acid in your stomach not staying in the place, which is your stomach. If you eat a large meal, it may push the stomach acid into the esophagus. This acid is not meant for any place except your stomach, so of course, you get symptoms. That acid will cause you to have burning and discomfort.

Of course, acid reflux is not just caused by large meals. Some people, infants and children included, have a problem with the sphincter in their esophagus. Sometimes, this sphincter (which can be compared to a small flap) may not close all the way, or it may open and close or have spasms. This will allow the stomach acid to react. This expulsion of stomach acid will leave you feeling sick and in need of medications.

You may not know that millions of people suffer from this problem. It is estimated that 25 million people living in the United States suffer from this condition at least some of the time. That equals to one out of every ten people. This means that people get this each and every day. For most cases of acid reflux, it is not necessary to see a doctor, but that can change if it gets worse. In fact, there are serious problems that can arise if serious and chronic acid reflux is not treated. Mainly, you can take over the counter medications. Zantax and Pepcid are also popular and easy choices.

If you know you have problems with acid reflux, then you can find solutions. Acid reflux can also be prevented by watching the foods that are eaten and by losing weight. There are certain foods that can trigger these symptoms. Tomatoes, onions, garlic and even coffee are all common culprits. There are herbs and other foods that will also help ease symptoms. These include ginger, peppermint, water and papaya.

There is no reason to suffer from acid reflux when there are lots of treatment options and way to prevent it. Learn more about acid reflux and how you can improve your chances of never getting it again.

There are a number of ways in which the symptoms of GERD and the patients’ specific complaint can be monitored and evaluated. This is beneficial as a means of getting to the route of the actual cause of the GERD after diagnosis, and can be helpful in learning more about the condition and identifying particular abnormalities.

A commonly used method for evaluating the condition and its causes is known as oesophageal motility testing. The is used to help measure the effectiveness of the oesophageal muscles, and measure how well they are functioning. A narrow tube is passed through the nose into the oesophagus which detects pressure within the oesophagus as the muscles contract around it. The patient is required to swallow water to allow the relaxation and contraction of the relevant muscles which can the be measured. This has two main points of importance in terms of evaluation, which are that it is useful in evaluating symptoms which are non-responsive to the conventional GERD treatment methods. Secondly, it is a good way to detect abnormalities within the muscular contractions which could be causing the reflux and leading to the patients’ problems.

Another effective method of GERD evaluation is by way of a gastric emptying study. This test is used to determine how effective the stomach is at emptying its contents, which may be the cause of GERD for some patients. The test is done by the patients consuming a meal which contains radioactive matter, which is then detected by a Geiger machine and timed before leaving the stomach. If the slow speed of emptying appears to be a problem, patients can be prescribed with medication to speed up the process. Related complaints of vomiting and regurgitation may be to do with problems of stomach emptying, and thus it is beneficial to use this testing method to uncover the root of the problem.

The acid perfusion test is another method of evaluation, primarily used to determine if pains in the chest are as a result of acid reflux. A tube is again passed into the oesophagus via the nostril. A mixture of an acidic and salty solution are passed alternatively down the tube to see if the patient responds to the acidic solutions. If the patient does feel the onset of the pains at this time, it is likely the pain is caused by acid reflux. This method of testing is very rarely used, and the more common oesophageal ph study is more effective for evaluating the nature of a patient’s complaint.

The monitoring and evaluation of GERD, like any medical condition is an important aspect of the medical process. It is important for the reasons of monitoring patients’ progress, and understanding fully the causes of their complaints. With so many tests available, the medical profession are in a very good position to treat GERD and related symptoms and monitor the progress of their treatment, more than ever before. It is therefore imperative to report any obvious signs of the condition to your doctor immediately to take full advantage of the available options.

Individuals of all ages are susceptible to acid reflux but those who are elderly tend to have serious conditions as a result of the acid reflux. There are many factors that contribute to your risk for acid reflux including your eating pattern, whether you have a condition such as pregnancy that may aggravate acid reflux, the presence of other diseases that can also aggravate the condition of acid reflux and those who are obese are also candidates for acid reflux.

Acid reflux can occur at any age because some of the factors for putting individuals at risk are things that we all do such as our eating patterns, and activities that we do after eating some of which can contribute to the occurrence of acid reflux.

Individuals no matter the age, who eat fast, or who eat foods that are high in fat, rich in sugars, or contain food items that are spicy may discover that the food “speaks back” after being consumed. Individuals who are also at high risk for heartburn are those who take naps after eating large meals such as is a common thing to do after a large meal like at Thanksgiving time. Anyone who is in the habit of snacking just before going to bed is also at a high risk for acid reflux.

Pregnant women experience heartburn especially in the third trimester of the pregnancy because that is when the uterus is growing and putting pressure on the stomach making it difficult to digest foods, resulting in acid reflux. This type of acid reflux resulting from pressure on the stomach is often resistant to medications or dietary interventions and is unfortunately for some, not relieved until the baby is delivered, which then takes the pressure off of the stomach.

Obesity is a risk factor for acid reflux because when an individual has a high BMI, there is an accumulation of abdominal fat that puts the individual at risk for acid reflux as well as complications such as Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Studies that followed individuals who had acid reflux found that weight loss reduced symptoms of acid reflux.

Respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) chronic bronchitis and emphysema can also put you at risk for acid reflux.

Individuals who consume alcohol can also be at risk for acid reflux because the alcohol relaxes the muscles responsible for keeping the stomach contents in the stomach and not coming back up into the esophagus. When these muscles referred to as LES muscles are relaxed they can’t do their job. Alcohol also may irritate the mucous membrane of the esophagus and it also increases the level of acid in the stomach all of which can contribute to acid reflux.

So if you are someone you love tend to eat too fast, eat large meals and then take naps, are pregnant, eat a diet high in fat, sugars or spicy foods, are obese, have respiratory diseases or drink alcohol you and they, may be at risk for acid reflux.

Individuals of all ages are at risk for acid reflux and over half of all Americans will succumb to that risk and develop symptoms. Those who are elderly can have serious conditions as a result of untreated acid reflux. There are many risk factors for acid reflux. Do you know the risk factors for acid reflux? Are you at risk for acid reflux?

Knowing what the risk factors for acid reflux are will help you to avoid the things that can trigger acid reflux. There are several risk factors for acid reflux that individuals of all ages can have. The risk factors include a certain eating pattern, women who are pregnant, those who are obese, individuals who have developed respiratory diseases, those who smoke, and also those who drink alcohol.

Those at most risk for severe acid reflux are the elderly, Caucasian males over age 40 whom are also overweight and those who use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) especially if they are also elderly, a female, use alcohol or tobacco products, have asthma, a hiatal hernia or are obese. Individuals with hiatal hernia are also at risk for severe acid reflux.

Your eating pattern could be putting you at risk for acid reflux if your eating pattern includes enjoying frequent heavy or large meals and then lying down afterwards, or bending at the waist such as for work after a heavy lunch. Individuals who consistently snack late in the evening or at bedtime are at risk for developing acid reflux.

It has always been that pregnant women complain about acid reflux especially during the last trimester of pregnancy because the growing uterus puts pressure on the stomach that pushes the food contents and stomach acid up towards and sometimes back up the esophagus. The sphincter muscle of the esophagus relaxes as during pregnancy which also makes this a likely scenario.

Individuals that are obese are at risk for acid reflux because obesity can contribute to the presence of acid reflux and increases the risk for certain complications of acid reflux like erosive esophagitis. Increased body mass index (BMI) has also been according to a study associated with an increased risk for another complication of acid reflux called, “esophageal adenocarcinoma”.

Individuals who suffer from respiratory diseases such as asthma, and also chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) like chronic bronchitis and emphysema, are also more likely to develop the symptoms of acid reflux.

If you are a smoker, you are increasing your risk for acid reflux because studies show that smoking can reduce the LES muscle function, which than increases the acid secretion, and impairs the muscle reflexes of the throat, which in turn damages protective mucus membranes. Smoking also reduces the saliva in your mouth (gives you dry mouth), and since saliva neutralizes acids no matter where those acids originate from such as those in the smoke or nicotine; this can lead to acid reflux although the studies do not show how this occurs only that it is more likely to happen. It is known that those who have used the popular nicotine patches have also experienced acid reflux but there can be several factors involved that could be triggering the acid reflux including the stress of quitting smoking or the nicotine.

Alcohol use also relaxes the LES muscles and when large amounts of alcohol are consumed, this may also irritate the mucous membranes of the esophagus, which can lead to acid reflux. Alcoholic beverages are known to increase the amount of acid in the stomach and if the person combines heavy alcohol usage and heavy smoking this doubles your risk for esophageal cancer, which is a complication of acid reflux.

The diagnosis of GERD is, like with most conditions, a complex procedure. There are a variety of accepted methods for diagnosing the condition, although care must always be taken to ensure that the GERD is the reall issue to hand, and the symptoms are not the result of a deeper underlying problem. The most common diagnosis of GERD is from its trademark symptom of heartburn. This burning sensation which usually occurs after meals is as a result of acid reflux, which may be caused by a multitude of reasons. As a test, patients with this complaint are usually prescribed medication to neutralise the excess stomach acid, which will validate the diagnosis of acid reflux if effective. This is most commonly referred to as the therapeutic trial, although this is not necessarily a foolproof diagnostic method, as other, sometimes more serious, conditions can mimic these symptoms.

Another common way of diagnosing GERD is by means of an Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. This involves the insertion of a small camera into the oesophagus, which allows for internal examination of the oesophagus and the stomach. In the majority of patients with reflux, this will not be a beneficial practice as their oesophagus can remain in a normal looking state. However, in a number of cases, the lining will be notably inflamed, which could help with the diagnosis of GERD. Furthermore, this can help with the identification of ulcers, which will give further cause for such a diagnosis and suggest the urgent nature of the treatment. Additionally, if there are any more serious problems such as cancers, these can be seen and diagnosed with the help of the endoscopy which makes the process worthwhile.

With the endoscopy, biopsies of the oesophagus can be taken which, although again not useful in the diagnosis of GERD can certainly aid the diagnosis of cancers or infectious causes, as they only afford examination of the cellular makeup and the state of the cells contained therein.

A particularly effective way in which acid reflux can be diagnosed is through oesophageal acid testing. This works on the principle that those suffering from acid reflux generally retain more and stronger acid within their oesophagus. Furthermore, the tests can be conducted fairly accurately on the basis of examining the length of retention of acid in the oesophagus, which is usually considerably longer in patients suffering from GERD.

Additional tests can be carried out by an ENT specialist on the throat. Close inspection could uncover the causes of discomfort, which could very well be acid and GERD. Similarly, the use of acid suppressing medication will also be a key feature of this diagnosis method, although again this will carry the associated diagnostic problems as mentioned above.

There are a range of means by which GERD can be diagnosed. Although varying in accuracy, a combination of methods may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any additional causes, as well as to allow a course of treatment to commence.

It is not unusual for a person to suffer both bad breath and acid reflux as the stomach acid backing up into the esophagus often carries with it the odor of the stomach acids that have their way into the esophagus or all the way up into the throat. It has often been said that bad breath is better than no breath at all, but your friends may not agree.

Most experts agree that a person’s breath is affected by what they eat so it only stands to reason that some of the same foods may be causing bad breath and acid reflux and a change of diet can help with both problems. When a person eats hot and spicy foods, the chemicals in the food that makes it spicy will enter the blood stream. As the blood passes through the lungs and is exchanged for oxygenated air, the person’s breath will reflect the odor leaving the blood stream.

Chronic and persistent indigestion can cause more damage than bad breath and acid reflux as the hydrochloric acid in the stomach is the same type of acid that is car batteries. It can burn the lining of the esophagus and if allowed to work upwards can cause pain in the ears as well as cause damage to the voice box and upper larynx.

Brushing And Flossing Not Always Effective

A person suffering from bad breath and acid reflux will find that consistent brushing and flossing, part of good oral hygiene, may not help with persistent bad breath. While contributing causes include lack of saliva activity, such as at night causing morning breath, many suffer morning breath as a result of indigestion.

When a person sleeps, chances are they are lying flat, and gravity cannot keep the contents of the stomach from slipping upwards through the lower esophagus sphincter muscle. Allowing the acid to rise back up causes bad breath and acid reflux and sometime the cure can be as simple as elevating the upper torso so gravity can work to keep the contents in the stomach where it belongs.

If a person suffers a feeling of acid rising in their throat, even when not accompanied by a burning sensation, it is an indication that acid reflux is in motion. Once the symptoms seem to disappear, they may still suffer bad breath and acid reflux may be the cause. To determine if you have bad breath, lightly lick the inside of your wrist and allow it to dry for a few seconds. If the spot has an odor once dry, then bad breath is present.
